Kenneth Merchant

Kenneth Merchant is the Deloitte & Touche LLP Chair in Accountancy and Professor of Accounting at Leventhal School of Accounting, part of the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He is an expert in management accounting, management control systems, and corporate governance.

Dr. Merchant has consulted or taught for numerous organizations, including: Amgen, ARCO, AT&T, British Airways, Campbell’s Soup, Digital Equipment, East-West Bank, IBM, Juniper Networks, McGraw-Hill, Novellus Systems, Occidental Petroleum, Philip Morris International, Ryland Homes, Tektronix, Toyota U.S.A., and World Bank.

Dr. Merchant is the author of many articles and books on accounting, including the standard textbooks: Accounting: Text and Cases and Management Control Systems: Performance Measurement, Evaluation and Incentives. Dr. Merchant’s research has also appeared in Accounting, Organizations and Society, The Accounting Review, Industrial Relations, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Marketing, and Management Science.

He has received numerous awards, including five Notable Contributions to Research awards from the American Accounting Association, two for lifetime contributions to the field. He also received an honorary doctorate from the Turku School of Economics (Finland) in 2010. Professor Merchant served as Dean of the Leventhal School of Accounting from 1994 to 2001. Before joining USC, he taught at Harvard Business School and UC-Berkeley. He currently serves on the board for three public corporations, two private corporations, a mutual fund, and two nonprofit organizations.

He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School, and a B.S. from Union College.
