Inflation ticked up in January, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising 0.5%, following a 0.4% increase in December. Over the past year, prices have climbed 3.0% overall. Here are some highlights from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Shelter (+0.4%) led the increase, making up nearly 30% of the monthly rise.
Energy jumped 1.1%, driven by a 1.8% rise in gasoline.
Food prices rose 0.4%, with food at home up 0.5%.
Other increases: Insurance, recreation, used cars, medical care, and airline fares.
